Tony Madlock completed his third season at Alabama State University as the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Champions after arriving on campus to lead the Hornets at the start of the 2022-23 season. In his first season at the helm of the Hornets, Madlock coached his son, T.J., to the SWAC Newcomer of the Year award while recording six SWAC victories and picking up a road win vs non-conference opponent, Eastern Illinois.
After three seasons at Alabama State, Madlock led the Hornets back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. Three (3) Hornets averaged double-figure scoring this season. The SWAC champions got 14.4 points per game from CJ Hines, 14.3 per game from Amarr Knox and 12.6 per game from TJ Madlock.
The Hornets saved their best for last this season, winning their last six games including three in the SWAC Tournament. The Hornets went about it a different way playing a more modern heavy three-point attack. It didn't matter about the opponent, and it didn't matter the score. The Hornets were in attack mode. They averaged 9 turnovers a game on the offensive end of the floor, which is one of the lowest numbers in the country. On the defensive end, Alabama State forced 13 turnovers a game. They won seven of their last eight games in the regular season, including a road win at top-seed and regular season champ Southern on March 6.
Alabama State is one of the few SWAC teams who had an overall winning record in the 2024 - 2025 season. They finished the season with 20-16 record and finished 12-6 in the SWAC. The 2024 - 2025 team was second in scoring in the SWAC and swept Southern University. Alabama State entered the SWAC tournament as the No. 5 seed and got an upset win over the No. 2 Jackson State Tigers in the final to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Madlock came to Alabama State after a year at South Carolina State in which his team finished 15-16 overall and 7-7 in the MEAC. The Bulldogs recorded non-conference victories over South Florida, High Point, Tennessee State, The Citadel, and Charleston Southern. They averaged 71.8 points per game last season while shooting 39.3 percent from the floor, while also leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game (15.23). They also finished third in the country in total rebounds per game at 41.81, trailing only Buffalo and Gonzaga.
Following that season, Madlock was named a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, given to college basketball’s top first-year coach after leading South Carolina State to its highest win total since 2015-16. The 15 wins by South Carolina State was the highest total in five seasons, with he and his son – TJ – leading the Bulldogs to one of the top turnarounds in the NCAA with 14 more wins than the program had all of 2020-21.
Prior to being named the head coach of the Bulldogs, Coach Madlock spent three years as an assistant coach with former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway at Memphis where they won the 2020 – 2021 NIT Championship. As an assistant coach on the Tiger staff, he helped guide Memphis into a national powerhouse beginning in 2018 with the No. 1 recruiting class in 2019.
Madlock, who had 25-plus years of experience as a college assistant, spent the 2017-18 as the interim head coach at Ole Miss. While at Ole Miss (2015-17), Madlock helped guide the Rebels to back-to-back 20-win seasons, including a trip to the NIT Quarterfinals.
Prior to Ole Miss, Madlock spent four seasons as an assistant coach on Tony Barbee’s staff at Auburn and four seasons as an assistant at UTEP. He was an assistant at Arkansas State for nine seasons, where he helped Arkansas State to the 1998 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship and the 1999 Sun Belt Conference tournament title.
Madlock earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from then-Memphis State in 1991 in 3.5 years.
A four-year letterman and three-year starter for Memphis from 1988-92, Madlock was a member of four postseason tournament teams for the Tigers advancing as far as the Elite Eight the 1992 season.
Madlock is married to the former Stacie Bryant of Memphis. They have two children -- a daughter, Kyndal, and a son, T.J.
